2014 Soldier’s Grant Cabernet

2014 Soldier’s Grant Cabernet

By: KEW Vineyards

Product Description

Both the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc wines dominate the Bordeaux and Loire Valley.

Our 2014 Soldier’s Grant is a medium bodied, Cabernet blend, consisting of 57% Cabernet Franc and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon. For this particular vintage, all of the the Cabernet Franc is dried out in the Appassimento style, crushed and then back-blended into the Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturing in oak for eighteen months, this blend is a wine that is strong in character and a fitting way for us to pay homage to the Kew family.

After the War of 1812, the Canadian government awarded Richard Kew the plot of land on which the vineyard sits today. His brother William maintained ownership of the land and ran a successful carriage making business out of the very house in which our retail space is located.

On the nose, stewed strawberry and blackberry are complimented by notes of clove and baking spice. Cherry and dark red fruits combine to create a rich palate that demonstrates bold notes of smoke and hickory. On the finish, the Appassimento style is evident in both the approachable tannin and incredibly smooth finish.

The Soldier’s Grant pairs well with heavy butter cream sauces, bitter foods, grilled or seared meats and pizzas. Specific meals that showcase Soldier’s Grant include, duck with huckleberry sauce, slow braised oxtail, pork with apple stuffing, grilled tuna, beef stew, eggplant parmesan and tomato and basil pizza. Cheeses that best pair with this wine are Cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan.
