2016 presented an ideal opportunity for winemaker Philip Dowell to create our first varietal Merlot. Philip strives to create wines expressive of our unique terroir, while always remaining true to the varietal character of the grape.

This Merlot strikes a beautiful balance between the robust fruit notes inherent to the varietal and the complexity resulting from 24 months in French oak.  Firm yet elegant structure forms the backbone of this wine, while plush textures and flavours on the palate keep it approachable.

Bright black cherry and dark plum on the nose deepen into sweet spice with a hint of spearmint.  On the palate the concentrated fruit follows through and is complemented by a rich note of baker’s chocolate.  Full bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and great structure, the 2016 Merlot has a long and opulent finish.


This wine’s full body and rich flavour profile reaches for an equally robust food pairing.  Consider such classics as a lean steak or pan-seared duck breast to match the Merlot’s smooth tannins.  With Merlot’s abundance of fruit though, it will be all about the sauce - a savoury blueberry sauce with the duck would match the fruit, whereas a peppercorn sauce with the steak would allow Merlot’s fruit to become the star.  For cheeses, Monterey Jack or Beaufort would be ideal.
